The Government is considering introducing 20mph speed limits for cyclists in urban areas.

In order to tackle dangerous cycling, the Department for Transport (DfT) said they are looking at proposals to update the Highway Code and Road Traffic Act to bring cyclists under 20mph speed limits, which are increasingly being introduced for cars in urban areas.

The DfT said that people who cycle have a duty to behave in a safe and responsible manner.

Transport secretary Grant Shapps told The Times, ‘There is definitely a hard core of cyclists who seem to think the laws of the road don’t apply to them. I do think the Highway Code should be updated to recognise speed limits for cyclists.

‘How can it be right that some people are able to break the speed limit and bomb through red lights? The time has come to have a look at a review and potentially update laws so they apply to cyclists as well.’

The DfT also said they were considering bringing forward legislation to introduce new offences around dangerous cycling.
