Rayner: Mayors must be accountable

Mayors must be accountable as they take back control of decision making as part of local government reorganisation, the deputy prime minister says.

Fourteen local leaders, including the newly elected mayors of Hull and East Yorkshire and Greater Lincolnshire, met today at Lancaster House in the largest Mayoral Council to date.

Chaired by deputy PM Angela Rayner, the meeting focused on devolution and accelerating economic growth.

Rayner also stressed that as more power and resources are transferred to regional mayors, it was increasingly important that they be held to account.

‘We are ripping up the long-standing “Whitehall knows best” rhetoric that has for too long stifled growth with a “one size fits all” approach,’ she said.

‘That’s why we are driving forward deeper, strategic devolution, so mayors can make decisions that will actually deliver for their communities.’
