Three-quarters of people want the Government to increase investment in making cycling safer, according to a new survey.
Bike Life, commissioned by Sustrans, revealed that the majority of people agreed an average of £26 per person should be spent on cycling annually. Of those who don’t ride a bike, 71% still backed the increase, with 67% saying their local area would be better if people cycled more.
Jason Torrance, policy director at Sustrans, said: ‘Physical inactivity, congestion and declining air quality cost our economy billions. Governments must act to secure a greater share of current transport investment for cycling and walking.
‘The Spending Review in November and the devolved elections next May are perfect opportunities to do just that. Government must ensure the Cycling and Walking Investment Strategy is ambitious and guarantees long-term funding for active travel.’
Bike Life gathered views from the public across seven cities in partnership with local councils: Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Greater Manchester and Newcastle.
