The Society of Local Council Clerks (SLCC) is encouraging town and parish councils across England to engage with a new Parliamentary inquiry into the future of high streets and town centres.

The Housing, Communities and Local Government Committee's 'Revitalising High Streets' inquiry will examine unwanted business growth, regeneration approaches, local authority powers, business rates, accessibility, and Government investment programmes including Pride in Place.

Evidence submissions close on 7 September 2026.

SLCC believes local councils are uniquely placed to contribute, given clerks' close understanding of how high streets are used and what regeneration has achieved locally.

Alongside individual submissions, SLCC is preparing a practitioner response and inviting clerks to share case studies and examples of regeneration successes and failures.
