Nottingham City Council has confirmed it will submit a proposal to the Government for a boundary review as part of the ongoing local government reorganisation (LGR) programme.
Two options for restructuring local government in Nottinghamshire are currently under consideration, both involving Nottingham combining with Broxtowe and either Gedling or Rushcliffe.
Feedback gathered during consultation raised concerns about the proposals – known as Options 1b and 1e – suggesting they either exclude urban areas closely linked to Nottingham or include regions with weaker ties to the city.
Council leader Neghat Khan said the options ‘fail to take that feedback into consideration, and split the Nottingham conurbation, with no thought to the surrounding suburbs identifying with the city, or to addressing the city and wider county’s needs for the future.’
Cllr Khan added that the city’s boundaries, last reviewed in 1997, no longer reflect its true footprint. ‘LGR has been extremely emotive, but we need to focus on the facts, and the data. And so far from what we’ve seen, a boundary review option has the potential to achieve a greater outcome for the whole region, by offering a solution that builds on the strong elements of 1b and 1e and mitigates the risks.’
Final proposals — which would see Nottingham combined with parts of Broxtowe, Gedling and Rushcliffe — are expected to be submitted to Government by 28 November 2025.
