Newly elected MP Vikki Slade will stand down as leader of Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council.
The Liberal Democrat MP for Mid Dorset and North Poole said she made the decision after speaking with cabinet members and her first few days in Westminster.
Local media had reported just this week that Ms Slade said there would be 'no immediate change' as she planned to stay on as council leader during the House of Commons summer recess.
She has now said she will remain a councillor, but resign as leader ahead of the next council meeting on 23 July.
In the meantime, deputy council leader Millie Earl will take decisions if required.
Ms Slade said: ‘Leadership of the council is a team effort and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank my cabinet colleagues and reassure residents that council business will continue as usual during this period.’
Chief executive Graham Farrant said: ‘A measured transition for the leader will help us to refine the planning and preparation that we had already undertaken for this scenario.’
A new council leader is expected to be voted in at the 23 July meeting.
