Liverpool City Council has ruled out holding a referendum on increasing council tax by up to 10%.
A budget simulator launched by the council found 57% of people taking part were against any increase in council tax above the 4.99% limit set by the Government.
While mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson ruled out the possibility of a referendum in his New Year’s message, he warned the council still needed to find another £90m of cuts over the next three years.
He said: ‘The results however show that there is a clear message from you for us to prioritise vulnerable people, this is going to be extremely difficult as the largest amounts of money we now spend is spent on social care, but we will try our hardest to do so.
‘We cannot avoid the facts. There are going to be some closures of buildings, reductions in services and jobs lost as we try and close the gaps caused by having less funding.’
Mayor Anderson also outlined plans to launch a lottery scheme this year to support those most in need.
