A major incident was declared in Somerset yesterday as residents were evacuated from their homes due to flooding.

Rest centres staffed by Somerset Council and volunteers sheltered more than 100 people who left their homes in Chard, Ilminster, Somerton and South Petherton in the early hours of Monday morning.

A major incident was stood up to bring about a multi-agency response from Somerset Council, Avon and Somerset Police, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue, local NHS, and the Environment Agency.

Several roads were also closed due to flooding and debris, with Highways teams working to deal with nearly 50 incidents.

Council leader Bill Revans said: ‘This was a significant flooding incident and we have been doing everything we can to ensure those affected are safe and have all the support and guidance they need.’

The multi-agency response will be maintained until further notice, with more rain forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday.
