Local government guru Sir Michael Lyons has hit back at critics who claimed his report was shelved.
Speaking this week at the Local Government Association’s conference and exhibition in Birmingham, Sir Michael said the Government had accepted all but two recommendations from the Lyons Inquiry.
'Most of my recommendations were left on the table,’ Sir Michael told delegates. ‘The reality is only two recommendations were rejected. They rejected my call for the abolition of capping and they rejected my call that there might be a base for a tourism tax.'
'I remain confident that the problems I exposed need to be tackled. If the Government continues to ignore them - well let's leave it at that.'
The new chairman of the LGA, Sir Simon Milton, added: 'The LGA certainly won't be allowed to let your report drop. As the new chairman, I intend to return to it again and again in the rebalancing for the central and local government.'
