Transport for London (TfL) has proposed increasing London’s congestion charge by 20% from January 2026.

The proposal entails a £3 rise in the charge paid by London drivers, whose congestion fee will stand at £18 per day after the policy goes into effect.

In a bid to encourage more sustainable transport methods in the city, new residents will be stopped from entering the discount scheme from March 2027 unless they own an electric vehicle.

Seb Dance, Deputy Mayor for Transport, said: 'Keeping London moving by reducing congestion is vital for our city and for our economy.

'The congestion charge has been a huge success since its introduction, but we must ensure it is fit for purpose.’

Dance highlighted that TfL’s new policies provide ‘substantial incentives’ for those transitioning to greener transport options.

However, critics say the reforms could negatively impact low-income drivers and those who cannot afford the switch to electric vehicle usage.
