Blackpool Council has taken over management duties of Blackpool Tower, marking an ‘exciting new chapter for Blackpool’s tourism industry’.
On August 1 the city’s famous landmark will be passed over to the council’s tourism company, Blackpool Tourism Limited, from Merlin Entertainments, who have managed the tower for the last 15 years.
The council will also take over Madame Tussauds, forming a partnership with Merlin that enables the well-loved tourist attraction to operate alongside Sandcastle Waterpark and Showtown Museum.
Emphasising the cultural significance of both Blackpool Tower and Madame Tussauds, the council has reinforced that local attractions must be ‘protected and preserved for future generations’.
Cllr Lynn Williams, Leader of Blackpool Council, said: ‘The benefits that our amazing attractions bring, will be kept in Blackpool. Our priority is creating jobs for local people, creating a vibrant economy for local businesses and giving millions of visitors a reason to come and stay in Blackpool.’
Andy Turner, Merlin’s Regional Director (Rest of UK) of Gateway Attractions, added: ‘We fully support the local authority’s desire to see these attractions return to local management, and we welcome the clear direction the council leadership has provided.’
