A £40m investment programme is underway to cut carbon emissions by more than half at 35 public buildings across the Liverpool City Region, including landmark waterfront sites.
Historic buildings such as the Cunard Building and Georges Dock Building will connect to the Mersey Heat network, while work has already begun at Bootle Leisure Centre and Library, Prescot Soccer Centre, Wirral Country Park and Landican Cemetery.
Public buildings account for 13% of the region’s emissions, with more than 600 sites producing around 77,000 tonnes of CO2.
The scheme will replace gas heating with low-carbon systems, improve insulation, install solar PV and modernise controls, reducing energy demand and saving an estimated 21,500 MWh annually.
Backed by £36m from the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme and local funding, the programme supports the city region’s target to reach net zero by 2035, while lowering energy bills and future-proofing public services.
Cllr Anthony Burns, Liverpool City Region Cabinet Member for Net Zero, said: ‘We know how big the task ahead is, but we also know the scale of the opportunity. With work already underway across the city region – from leisure centres and libraries to parks and historic landmarks – we’re proving that our commitment to reach net zero by 2035 is real, practical and already delivering results. Public buildings account for a sizeable amount of the total emissions, so it is right that we lead by example.’
