A workplace parking levy is being discussed by Leeds City Council to produce funds for a planned tram network.
The annual levy could see businesses that offer staff parking pay as much as £2,080 for a space, with the potential to produce between £15m to £25m per year.
Revenue from the scheme will contribute towards funding enhancements to the region’s transport network, which includes proposals for a West Yorkshire tram network.
The charge will affect businesses with at least 10 parking spaces in a specific area, with disabled parking spaces, hospitals and fleet vehicles exempt from the fee.
A council spokesperson said: ‘The current level of funding available to us is insufficient to cover our ambitions, and introducing a mechanism such as a workplace parking levy is one funding option which could help generate the revenue needed.’
They added: 'This is the initial stage of consultation on the potential to use Workplace parking levy proposals, to inform a future decision. We have written to all businesses within the proposed scheme’s boundary and encourage them to take part in this consultation before it closes on Sunday 19 October.'
