Gateshead’s town centres are to receive ‘dramatic’ improvements under its regeneration scheme.
The proposals were approved yesterday by cabinet members and involve plans to revamp Gateshead’s town centres, neighbourhoods, community spaces and the riverside.
According to the Gateshead Council, the plan could generate thousands of jobs, as well as delivering housing on brownfield sites, businesses and public spaces.
The council has revealed that the scheme will ‘require substantial public sector investment’, with improvements to the Tyne’s urban core being delivered alongside Newcastle City Council and the North East Combined Authority (NECA).
To ensure the success of the initiative, the council has been collaborating with colleges, universities and employers to help advance the skills of local workers to participate in project.
A Gateshead Regeneration Programme Partnership has also been established between Homes England, NECA and government bodies to support the ‘scale’ and ‘pace’ of the scheme.
Cllr Martin Gannon, Leader of Gateshead Council, said: ‘This is a landmark moment for Gateshead. Our Regeneration Plan sets out a bold vision to create new homes, jobs and public spaces that will benefit our communities for generations.
‘By investing in our town centre, riverside and neighbourhoods, and working closely with our residents and partners, we are establishing Gateshead thriving - a borough that is vibrant, connected and full of opportunity for everyone.’
