Labour has announced a five-point plan that it argues could ‘breathe new life’ into high streets.
The opposition party promises to replace business rates with a new system of business property taxation aimed at levelling the playing field between high street retailers and online businesses.
The plans also include 13,000 more neighbourhood police and Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) to tackle anti-social behaviour and the scrapping of the rule which stops shoplifting worth under £200 from being investigated.
Labour also plan to revamp empty shops, pubs and community spaces, and introduce banking hubs. New laws to stamp out late payments will also be introduced.
