Inverclyde make £1.6m equal pay settlement

Inverclyde Council will pay £1.6m to settle equal pay claims from 400 current and previous female employees.

Having come to an agreement with trade union GMB which submitted the equal pay claims, the local authority’s payout will cover outstanding employment tribunal cases regarding equal pay claims from female staff who have been considered to have not received equivalent payment to their male colleagues.

GMB has recommended that its members accept the town hall’s offer.

Inverclyde Council chief executive John Mundell, said: ‘I am pleased that the council and the GMB have come to an agreement to settle the outstanding claims and that their members will now be compensated.’

Earlier this year, the Supreme Court permitted 147 female former employees of Birmingham City Council to make compensation claims over missed bonuses awarded to traditionally male occupied roles.
