A single unitary council for Hertfordshire ‘risks diminishing local representation’, local leaders warn.

Hertfordshire is set to undergo unitarisation as part of the Government’s reorganisation push. This will see the current two-tier system replaced with a single unitary authority.

However, 10 Hertfordshire council leaders have signed a joint statement opposing the reforms.

‘A single unitary council for the county risks diminishing local representation, with decision-making that is remote from the communities we serve,’ the statement said.

‘Our objective must be to get this right for our residents and businesses. That cannot be achieved if we make rushed decisions that have not been given the serious consideration that they deserve.’
