Three ‘insect friendly’ bus shelters have been introduced across West Bridgford, Nottinghamshire.
Nottinghamshire County Council has ensured the new shelters are designed to accommodate pollinators, providing green roofs to nurture bees, wasps, butterflies and moths.
Key features of the shelters, which are situated on Radcliffe and Bridgford Road, include new passenger seating and solar powered lighting to support the council’s sustainability goals.
The project is backed by funding from the Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP) and involves plans to build four additional shelters in the area by March next year.
According to the council, the move is intended to enhance public transport journeys taken by residents, as well as cut costs, create energy savings and facilitate the production of new habitats for insects.
Cllr Bert Bingham, Cabinet Member for Transport and Environment at Nottinghamshire County Council, said: ‘The new look stops appeal to bus users travelling in and out of the area, create clean green energy and help improve biodiversity.
‘It’s important that we all strive to protect insects, as many play a vital role in pollination, which is essential for maintaining healthy ecosystems.’
