Government unveils improved daily report on Covid-19 deaths

From today, the new daily count for deaths caused by Covid-19 will include those occurring in care homes for the first time.

The Government said the new system will include data on anyone who has died who has tested positive for Covid-19 across all settings and not just hospitals.

The ONS and CQC have also set out a more up to date assessment of deaths specifically in care homes.

The new figures will also include the whole of the UK. Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales already report out of hospital deaths.

There was a total of 2,905 deaths in English care homes involving coronavirus, up to 17 April, the Office for National Statistic (ONS) has revealed.
