Most of the residents of a Surrey village affected by a huge sinkhole are now able to return to their homes, the council has confirmed.

The cavity appeared in Godstone last month and soon expanded to about 20 metres, leading to water supplies being cut off. This was followed by a second sinkhole nearby.

Residents of about 30 properties were forced to evacuate their homes, although six households were told it was safe to return within a week.

After extensive testing, Tandridge District Council and Surrey Highways have said they are confident it is now safe for all households, except four, to return home from this weekend.

Cllr Catherine Sayer, leader of the council, said: ‘This has been a difficult and stressful time for them and our priority has been to ensure they receive the support they need. We thank them for their patience and co-operation, as we continue work to resolve the situation.’
