Gloucestershire council claims to be ‘first in Europe’ to become carbon neutral

A council in Gloucestershire is claiming to be the first in Europe - and just the second worldwide - to become carbon neutral.

Stroud DC says it now saves more carbon dioxide than it produces thanks to a range of efficiency measures and installations using renewable energy.

These include solar panels on council buildings, upgraded lighting and improved insulation.

Simon Pickering, chair of the council’s environment committee, hailed it as a ‘tremendous achievement’.

'We have brought in over £36m investment into county allowing us to create jobs, cut heating bills and, of course, reduce carbon emissions,' he said.

'It’s been a win-win approach to tackling climate change, helping households and stimulating the local economy.'
