Parents have begun legal action over ‘drastic cuts’ to education services in Glasgow City Council’s budget.
Glasgow City Parents Group (GCPG) has instructed its lawyers to consider judicial review proceedings over the council’s plans to reduce teacher numbers by 450 over three years and halve the number of mentoring coordinators.
GCPG said the cuts would have a ‘profoundly negative’ impact on the quality of education and support provided to children and young people.
According to the group, the local authority failed to conduct a full Equalities Impact Assessment (EQIA) before signing off the cuts – an omission it said was a ‘clear violation’ of the council’s legal obligations.
GCPG chair Leanne McGuire said: ‘It is unacceptable that such significant decisions were made without a comprehensive understanding of their impact on all pupils, particularly those who are most vulnerable.’
The council said it had published a scoping EQIA when its budget was set, which showed it was meeting statutory requirements in relation to class sizes.
A spokeswoman added that council lawyers were reviewing the legal correspondence and it would be ‘inappropriate’ to comment further.
