An ex-finance officer at Gedling Borough Council has been jailed for five years after he stole almost £1m to fund a gambling addiction.
Alan Doig, 57, transferred £934,343.30 into his own bank accounts between 2003 and 2022 while he was employed as a senior assistant accountant.
The fraud was discovered when a colleague identified discrepancies within the financial systems, prompting an internal investigation.
Mr Doig was subsequently dismissed, and Nottinghamshire Police were informed.
At his sentencing hearing, judge Nirmal Shant KC said he had stolen the equivalent of 6% of the council's entire budget for one year.
Gedling Borough Council’s chief executive Mike Hill said the council was ‘in shock’. ‘This was a criminal act and the sentencing reflects the crime and we believe that justice has been served,’ he added.
