Disciplinary action launched after 'hired killers' tweet

Disciplinary action has been launched by the Green Party against a councillor who called armed forces personnel ‘hired killers’ on Twitter.

Brighton and Hove City Council member Ben Duncan has since apologised for the offence caused by his tweet on Armed Forces Day.

A petition demanding the resignation of Cllr Duncan has secured more than 1,800 signatures.

The online petition read: ‘It is one thing to question the legitimacy of going to war.

‘It is quite another to insult the men and women who sacrifice life and limb so that we enjoy peace, freedom of speech and democracy.’

Responding to the petition, Green party MP Caroline Lucas said she had called on the local Green party to take disciplinary action, adding ‘that process is now underway’.
