Councils have reported disruption to their call centres after a Cyber attack on outsourcing giant Capita.

The incident on Friday left people unable to access IT applications over the weekend, with Barnet and Lambeth LBCs among the authorities affected.

A statement released by Capita read: ‘This caused disruption to some services provided to individual clients though the majority of our client services remained in operation.

‘The issue was limited to parts of the Capita network and there is no evidence of customer, supplier or colleague data having been compromised.’

Barnet LBC reported its main phone number was out of operation and Lambeth said its call centre was ‘experiencing technical difficulties’.

Local government minister Lee Rowley said yesterday the Government was already ‘undertaking a survey of malware and ransomware across all English councils’ following previous cyber attacks on Redcar & Cleveland Council and Hackney LBC.
