Coventry City Football Club could be awarded the Freedom of the City following its promotion to the Premier League after 25 years away from the top flight of English football.
Coventry City Council has called an Extraordinary General Meeting on 23 June 2026 at which councillors will be asked to confer the honour – the highest a local authority can bestow – in recognition of the club's Championship title win and its contribution to the city.
Under manager Frank Lampard, the Sky Blues were crowned EFL Championship champions this season, securing promotion on 17 April with three matches to spare. An open-top bus parade on Bank Holiday Monday drew an estimated 200,000 people, with a further 50,000 attending a celebration festival in War Memorial Park.
The honour, if approved by at least two-thirds of councillors, would be conferred on the club in its entirety, recognising players, management, staff, owner and supporters.
Council leader George Duggins said: ‘This is an extraordinary achievement which deserves an extraordinary honour.’
