The Department for Transport (DoT) has launched a consultation around plans to allow local authorities and mayors to approve self-driving taxi service pilots in their area from next spring.
The move is ahead of plans by ministers to roll out the use of driverless taxis, including private hire cars and ‘bus-like’ local services, in 2027 through provisions in the Automated Vehicles Act.
Accessibility of self-driving vehicles for disabled and older people is among issues being considered in the consultation.
Another is around when permits for driverless vehicles can be altered, suspended or withdrawn.
The process of how councils can approve the use of self-driving vehicles is also being looked as well as safety issues involved.
Minister for the future of roads Lilian Greenwood said: ‘Self-driving vehicles are one of the most exciting opportunities to improve transport for so many people, especially those in rural areas or unable to drive.
‘We want to work with passengers and industry to make this new form of transport safe and accessible, as we take our next steps towards adoption.'
