Two councils have apologised to residents after a council tax error left them out of pocket.
Teignbridge District Council and Newton Abbot Town Council issued an official apology after an administrative mistake led to this year’s council tax bills in Newton Abbot being too high.
They were billed the annual Band D sum of £81 instead of the intended £71.97.
The additional money, the councils have agreed, will be placed in a ring-fenced account and deducted from next year’s council tax bill.
The option of rebilling the residents was rejected because it would cost too much and place an unnecessary burden on taxpayers.
