Improvements have been made to SEND services delivered by Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council but services remain inconsistent, according to a new report.

The Ofsted report said partnership leaders were increasingly securing better lived experiences for children and young people with SEND and their families through effective multi-agency working and issued timely education, health and care plans.

However, areas for improvement were noted, including: ensuring the workforce had sufficient expertise and resources, and that parents, carers and children and young people were involved in these plans; ensuring children, young people and parents and carers were well informed about the partnership's provision through an effective local offer to support children and young people with SEND; accelerating recovery plans for children and young people with SEND awaiting assessment for neurodevelopmental needs; expanding support for children and young people on the waiting list; and continuing to embed a needs-led approach.

Cllr Richard Burton, BCP council portfolio holder for children and young people, said: ‘This report is an important milestone. It is encouraging to see recognition of the progress made since our last inspection, and we have a clear understanding of what is working well and what needs to improve. We are optimistic about the future and will continue to work closely with partners, schools, and families to ensure that every child and young person in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole can thrive.'
