North Yorkshire Council is set to trial a ban on overnight motorhome parking at coastal hotspots because of ‘safety fears’ and escalating complaints from residents.
The proposals would see people unable to park motorhomes on certain streets in Sandsend, Scarborough and Cayton Bay between 11pm and 7am for an initial 18 months.
Executive member for highways and transport Keane Duncan said a council survey had ‘indicated that we do need to take action given the scale of overnight parking in these hotspot locations’.
He claimed extended stays were ‘posing a serious safety hazard’.
North Yorkshire said there had been a number of fires as well as increasing numbers of complaints to the council, police and fire service.
Residents have told the council that vehicles are restricting parking for other motorists and that there is an adverse effect on the local economy.
The council’s environment directorate, which consists of Cllr Duncan and assistant director for highways and transportation Barrie Mason, will make a decision on the trial today.
