The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea has ordered the removal of insulation made by a firm that was implicated in the Grenfell tragedy.

The council discovered a product made by Kingspan had been used on two council tower blocks by its contractor, Lawtech.

Kingspan was involved in the production of combustible foam used on Grenfell Tower.

While the company has denied any wrongdoing relating to the 2017 blaze, the council said in 2021 it would no longer contract with them or allow its contractors to subcontract with them.

Cllr Kim Taylor-Smith, lead member for Grenfell, housing and social investment, today commented: ‘Our officers discovered a Kingspan product on 16 balconies as part of an inspection on Friday 7 July 2023. We instructed Lawtech to remove it immediately. This has now been done and will be replaced with the originally specified product, Rockwool.

‘Lawtech’s use of Kingspan is an absolute breach of our instruction and trust. I am deeply disappointed and have asked for a full explanation of how this has happened. I expect Lawtech to make an apology to our residents.

The Kingspan product used was not combustible.
