Carmarthenshire County Council (CCC) has been unsuccessful in its application for an interim injunction to prevent asylum seekers being housed at the Stradey Park Hotel in Llanelli.
Cllr Darren Price, leader of CCC, said on Friday (7 June): ‘We are disappointed with the court’s decision today, however I have no regrets in bringing this case to court, as we owed this to the residents and businesses of Llanelli, the community of Ffwrnes and the staff at the Stradey Park Hotel to take every step possible.’
He added: ‘The council remains of the view that the UK Government needs to review their policy on the use of hotels in accommodating asylum seekers. The current approach is obviously not working.’
In June, the Home Office confirmed that the hotel would be used to accommodate a maximum of 207 asylum seekers, made up of family groups. Judge Gavin Mansfield KC will give his reasons for dismissing the bid at a hearing on Monday afternoon (10 July).
The council has also applied for a permanent injunction.
