Local government representation on Cobra, the committee for dealing with national emergencies, is essential, council leaders say after last week’s riots.
Responding to the violent unrest by far-right extremists, the Local Government Association (LGA) argued that a voice for councils on the committee was essential for dealing with community tensions.
‘Councils know their local places best and the Government and other agencies need to ensure they make use of local figures who can help calm community tensions,’ said LGA chair Cllr Louise Gittins.
‘Local government representation at COBR [also known as Cobra] is vital in ensuring a quick and effective response on key issues, making the most of local government intelligence, experience and expertise.’
Cllr Gittins also said adequate funding for diversionary activities for young people and initiatives aimed at promoting social cohesion was crucial for building more cohesive communities over the long term.
