The leader of Newcastle City Council has resigned after an accusation of bullying was made against him.
Cllr Nick Kemp, who is currently on sick leave, stepped down on Friday (20 September) following a complaint about bullying made by the director of investment and growth, Michelle Percy.
Cllr Kemp has reportedly written to colleagues ‘strenuously’ denying the allegations, adding that recent events had ‘had a significant and detrimental effect on me and my family’.
Deputy leader of the council, Cllr Karen Kilgour, said: ‘I would like to thank Cllr Kemp for all his hard work during his time as leader of council.
‘We will not be commenting further while there is an ongoing council process.’
