Stoke-on-Trent City Council has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of a four-year-old girl at the Waterworld water park.

In a statement, the local authority said its environmental health team were ‘working with the police and the privately-run venue to undertake a full health and safety investigation.’

Police were called to Waterworld on Monday responding to reports of a girl in a critical condition. She was treated at the scene and taken to hospital but died a short while later.

Cllr Steve Watkins, the Lord Mayor of Stoke-on-Trent, said: ‘We were all devastated to hear of the death of a four-year-old girl at Waterworld. This is a terrible tragedy, and our thoughts are with her family and loved ones.’
