City of Doncaster Council has granted planning permission for what is billed to be the UK’s biggest battery site.
The 1.4GW battery energy storage system facility will be built on a 55-acre site at Thorpe Marsh in Yorkshire, adjacent to a National Grid substation and a disused coal mine.
Chris Elder, Fidra Energy’s Chief Executive Officer, said: ‘As the largest battery energy storage site in the UK, the project will help turbocharge the UK’s ambitions of achieving a clean power system providing critical flexibility to store energy when there is excess renewable generation and release this when needed.’
