Cambridgeshire County Council has agreed it will no longer defend a legal challenge of its decision to close a city road bridge to cars.
The authority approved a traffic regulation order (TRO) last March that would close Mill Road bridge in Cambridge to motor vehicles, with some exemptions, to encourage other modes of travel.
But the scheme was delayed after a local campaigner launched a legal challenge.
Cambridgeshire announced this week it had reflected on the hearing, which took place in February, and agreed to end the legal action to ‘stop the council spending money and time associated with defending this case’.
However, it will launch a fresh consultation on the proposals this week, and in October councillors will discuss whether to implement the TRO.
The council said: ‘We’d like to apologise for the time this has taken thus far and recognise the frustration people have expressed locally.’
