Teams from East Lindsey District Council have cleaned up over 12 tonnes of plastic pellets from Lincolnshire’s beaches following a crash between two ships in the North Sea.

On 10 March the Solong cargo ship and the Stena Immaculate oil tanker collided triggering an operation that saved 36 crew from the two vessels.

The pellets – also known as ‘nurdles’ – are non-toxic balls of plastic resin used in the production of plastics.

They will be brought to Lincolnshire County Council’s waste transfer station to be bulked up and sent for safe disposal via energy from waste.
