The City of London reduced its carbon emissions by 74% between 2005 and 2023, reveals Government data.
According to a report by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, the City of London has seen the most significant decrease in carbon emissions within its ‘scope of influence’ compared to other councils from 2005 to 2023.
The data reveals that 98% of the 361 local authorities in the UK successfully cut both carbon and transport emissions between 2022 and 2023, with the City of London presenting the largest decrease in transport emissions, and South Cambridgeshire the largest rise.
Despite its reductions in the transport sector, the report highlighted the City of London as the local authority area with the ‘highest emissions per capita in 2023’.
With emissions in the City of London totalled at ‘52 tonnes of CO2e (tCO2e) per person’ during 2023, the report links the figure to the ‘high level of commercial activity compared to the size of its resident population’.
