Gosport Borough Council has formally opposed the Government's proposal to reorganise local councils across Hampshire.
In a letter to the Secretary of State for Communities, Housing and Local Government, Cllr Peter Chegwyn, leader of Gosport Borough Council, reiterated the council's stance that decisions affecting Gosport should remain under local control.
The Government's plan suggests merging existing councils into larger entities serving populations of approximately 500,000. One such proposal includes merging Gosport with Portsmouth, Fareham, and Havant.
However, a recent independent survey indicates that 77% of Gosport residents oppose such a merger, with only 15% in favour.
Cllr Chegwyn argued that there was no evidence to suggest that reorganisation would lead to improved or more efficient services.
