Thurrock Council needs to borrow £206.7m from the government to balance its 2023-24 budget, according to a report on the council’s financial position.
The local authority originally estimated that it would require £180.2m in exceptional financial support from the Government.
However, according to a provisional financial outturn report, the council needs to borrow an extra £26.5m.
Thurrock Council has been subject to Government intervention since issuing a s114 – effectively declaring bankruptcy – in December 2022 after accruing debts of £1.3bn.
The commissioners reportedly said the secretary of state was ‘minded to approve’ the extra financial support package.
