Birmingham City Council’s shadow cabinet member for children and family services has called for his counterpart to resign over the ‘abject failure of her department’.
Cllr James Hutchings made the call for Cllr Brigid Jones’ resignation at a meeting of the council’s education and vulnerable children overview and scrutiny committee joint scrutiny board.
He said: ‘It is under this Labour administration that the children and family services have been a disaster.
‘To have such a disastrous failure in children’s care and education is without precedent.’ Committee chairman Cllr Anita Ward said she was ‘disappointed’ that Cllr Hutchings had ‘used this arena to try to score cheap political points’.
Cllr Jones has said council leader Cllr Sir Albert Bore turned her resignation down when she offered it on reading the report by Ian Kershaw, which found the authority ‘failed to respond’ to complaints by heads and staff of pressure and intimidation.
