Oxford’s £5 congestion charge has been approved by the county council’s cabinet.
In the meeting yesterday, cabinet members confirmed that the temporary charge will be introduced by late autumn this year, following a six-week consultation from June to August.
According to Oxfordshire County Council, the consultation invited more than 7,000 responses that influenced the final proposals.
Since the consultation began, the council has added two new permits to the scheme, providing free access for those using Oxford Oxford Ice Rink frequently, as well as for businesses and organisations who own pool cars in the area.
Cllr Andrew Gant, Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport Management, said: ‘Oxford needs a more sustainable, reliable and inclusive transport system for everyone.
‘People have told us they want quicker journeys, more reliable bus services, and safer cycling and walking. In order to achieve that we need to reduce the number of cars on our roads. That is what the temporary congestion charge is set to achieve.’
The council expects the initiative to raise an estimated £3.2m over 10 months, with cabinet members requesting that officers consider how the funds can be used to ensure maximum effect.
Cllr Gant added that the local authority will remain open to feedback from residents about the scheme once it is implemented.
