More than 300 staff in Barnet are to be transferred back to council employment after a decade-long union campaign.

They are currently employed by outsourcing conglomerate Capita and are being brought back in house after the north London council was used as a test case for the outsourcing of local government services.

The staff have been working under a joint venture called Capita Re in services including trading standards, environmental health and planning highways.

Much of the service provision at the council was outsourced to Capita In 2012 on decade-long contracts by the then Conservative-controlled authority.

The following 10 years were marked by several controversies including a multi-million-pound fraud and contracts running massively over budget.

Labour won control of the council last year and fast-tracked plans to ‘insource’ the services by six months.

The authority said the move put an end to the era of the so-called ‘easy council’ and showed its commitment to value for money.

John Burgess, UNISON’s Barnet local government branch secretary, said: ‘This is good news for staff, good news for residents and good news for the services.

‘I welcome the decision and look forward to welcoming back all the services back into Barnet Council where they all belong.’
