BT has rolled out its municipal wireless cities programme, providing wi-fi connectivity in outdoor urban areas to Manchester,Belfast and Waltham Forest LBC. The company is also currently installing wi-fi in Birmingham, Liverpool, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Nottingham, Portsmouth, Cardiff, Sheffield, Bristol and Westminster. BT’s networks use council property such as lampposts and civic buildings to install access points which are linked to the Internet.
Cllr Elizabeth Campbell, leader of Kensington and Chelsea, warns that the Government’s fairer funding plans could force London councils into cutting services.
