An agreement between Warrington Borough Council and the trade union Unite has put an end to refuse workers’ strikes.

Warrington BC said it had ‘agreed positive resolutions to a number of local issues’ with Unite.

The trade union said the agreement includes a dispute resolution payment, improved terms and conditions and the creation of permanent full-time roles for staff on temporary seasonal contracts.

Workers had been striking intermittently since 3 October.

The most recent bout of industrial action was due to end on Christmas Eve before Unite agreed that its members would return to work immediately.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: ‘This result was made possible by the absolute unity of our members.

‘By standing together and taking industrial action, they ensured the council made a much-improved offer.’

Earlier this month, Warrington BC failed to secure an interim injunction to put an end to the industrial action.
