A government grant to help households install an air source heat pump has increased by half to £7,500.
The Government said homes might now be able to install a heat pump for cheaper than a gas boiler if they took advantage of the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant and additional discounts offered by energy suppliers.
The scheme has also been extended by three years to 2028.
The secretary of state for energy security and net zero, Claire Coutinho, said: ‘No one should have to choose between cutting costs and cutting emissions – our pragmatic approach means we can continue to deliver on our ambitious net zero targets without unfairly hitting the pockets of hardworking families.’
The announcement comes after the Government delayed the ban on new oil and gas boilers and new coal heating for off-gas-grid homes to 2035, rather than phasing them out by 2026.
An exemption to the phase-out of fossil fuel boilers was also made for homes that would need significant or expensive upgrades to switch to a heat pump.
The Government said it would explore approaches to decarbonising off-gas-grid homes via a consultation next year.
