The Government has provided £17m to help homeless people off the streets as it insisted it would deliver its pledge to end rough sleeping this year.
The money has been given to ‘local authorities across England most in need’, according to the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC).
London boroughs collectively received more than £3m, while £400,000 was awarded to Nottingham City Council, £300,000 to Bristol City Council, and almost £250,000 to Hastings and Eastbourne borough councils, the DLUHC said.
Rough sleeping minister Felicity Buchan said: ‘We are determined to deliver our manifesto pledge to end rough sleeping and [this] announcement demonstrates our continuing commitment to supporting the most vulnerable in our society with access to a safe and warm home, backed by over £2bn of government funding over three years.’
However, the Kerslake Commission on Homelessness and Rough Sleeping warned last September that the Government will fail on its pledge to end rough sleeping within the current Parliament because of a ‘chronic shortage’ of affordable housing and support services.
