Every day in England, 172 private renting families are handed a Section 21 no-fault eviction notice by their landlord as progress stalls on the Renters (Reform) Bill, Shelter has said.
New research by the charity found that more than 188,000 private renters with children have been told by landlords to move out of their home without a reason in the past three years.
Nearly one in five private renting families had to move three or more times in the past five years, highlighting high levels of instability, Shelter said.
In May, the Government published its Renters (Reform) Bill, which included a ban on no-fault evictions and new protection for renters, but it has only reached the second reading stage in Parliament.
Polly Neate, chief executive of Shelter, said: ‘It is unacceptable that the Renters (Reform) Bill has made no progress in Parliament, when the very eviction notices the government promised to ban years ago are continuing to land on people’s doorsteps in their droves.
‘The government must bring back the Bill as soon as Parliament returns. England’s 11 million private renters are depending on it.’
