The West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) has unveiled a plan to remove unsafe cladding from residential buildings over 11 metres tall, aiming to prevent another tragedy like Grenfell.
The Remediation Acceleration Plan, launched at the Building Safer Future Conference by Deputy Mayor Cllr Sharon Thompson, focuses on three priorities: speeding up remediation through increased enforcement, monitoring buildings for unsafe cladding, and supporting residents throughout the process.
It follows the Grenfell Inquiry Report, which urged Mayoral Combined Authorities to coordinate action with councils, fire services, and other partners.
Mayor Richard Parker said: ‘The Grenfell Tower tragedy must always remain in our minds as a stark example of what can happen when safety is not put first. That’s why we’ve been working with partner agencies to get the remediation process sped up, so we can ensure nothing like this ever happens again. Everyone deserves a safe home.’
The WMCA is now consulting residents and stakeholders on the challenges and support needed to deliver the plan, which complements the national government’s remediation strategy.
